Singapore's Humanitarian Assistance to Cambodia

CAMBODIA, PHNOM PENH, KOMPONG CHAM, Oct 23, 2011-The Singapore Embassy in Phnom Penh on 23 witnessed the distribution of humanitarian relief supplies to 1,000 flood-affected families in Batteay District of Kampong Cham Province this morning.

"These relief supplies were part of the S$100,000 contribution presented to the Cambodian Red Cross by the Singapore Red Cross on 13 October 2011." the statement from embassy said.

It added: The Singapore Government had earlier contributed US$100,000 as seed money to kickstart the Singapore Red Cross appeal for donations for Cambodia and other countries in the region affected by the floods. 

The distribution ceremony, organised by the Cambodian Red Cross, was presided by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong and Cambodian Senior Minister of Special Projects and First Vice-President of the National Committee for Disaster Management Nhim Vanda. 

In his speech to the affected families from four communes of Batteay District (Sambour, Sandaek, Me Pring and Batheay), DPM Hor Namhong said that several countries had donated supplies to the Cambodian people, including China, Vietnam, Australia and Singapore.

He expressed his appreciation for the donations at the ceremony which was attended by the Ambassador of Singapore Premjith Sadasivan. DPM Hor Namhong noted that Singapore is a 'small country with a big heart'.  cambodia lost over $520 million from flood's damage and it killed 247 people. it alsop affected 1.5 million local people.

CAMBODIA, PHNOM PENH, Oct 23, 2011-Cambodia's disaster management committee announced on Sunday that country lost $520 million from the damage of dead flood this year.

"The damage from flood this year is a serious matter for the country," Nhim Vanda, first vice president of national disaster management committee said by phone. "It destroyed rice paddies, and other agricultural crops along Mekong River and Tonle Sap in the country, people life, cattle and households for local people," he stresses.

Report from committee said: the flood inundated 18 provinces and towns in the country and affected 1.5 million people in the country as the 400,000 hectares of rice paddies inundated and it killed 247.
