YANGON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar official media on Monday hailed the country's winning of a gold medal by a selected rowing team  in the 2011 First Asian Traditional Regatta Festival held in Fangchenggang of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China.
Myanmar stood first in the 10000m men's traditional 21-oar event while Guangxi placed second and Hong Kong third in the event which ran from May 29 to June 3.
A grand welcome for the victorious team was launched by officials of the Sports and Physical Education Department and the Myanmar Rowing Federation, said the New Light of Myanmar.
Seven teams from Cambodia, Singapore, Canada, China's Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, Chinese Taipei and Myanmar, 11 teams from Guangxi and three from Vietnam for a total of 21 teams participated in the festival.
Myanmar traditional boat race plays an important role in attracting tourists to the country.
Myanmar has started to compete in 16th SEA Game in Philippines in 1991.
Myanmar grabbed gold medals from 16th to 24th SEA Games which had been held since 1991 and pocketed most gold medals in 22nd SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003 and 24th SEA Games in Thailand in 2007.

YANGON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A national arbiter of chess course for Myanmar chess players will be conducted in Myanmar later this year, aimed at developing the ability of arbiters of chess in the country, the local weekly Voice News reported Monday.
Organized by the Myanmar Chess Federation and Myanmar Sports and Physical Education Department, two chess international arbiters from the World Chess Federation will lecture Myanmar arbiters in August.
Those who are outstanding at the course will have chance to attend Arbiter Seminar which is aimed for the 27th SEA Games to be hosted in Myanmar in 2013, the report said.
Meanwhile, with one grand master and about 10 international masters, nearly 100 players mainly played traditional chess in Yangon.
Chess is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide at home, clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The driver of a minivan has been arrested for killing three students and a pedestrian and injuring 20 others in a road accident in northeast Beijing.
The driver, surnamed Liang and from the city of Chengde in Hebei Province, was found involved in unlicensed driving with fatigue, the municipal publicity department said in a press release.
The accident occurred around 6:40 a.m. Thursday as a minivan went out of control and crashed into a crowd of students walking to school in the town of Machangying in the suburban Pinggu district.
Of the 20 injured, four were still in imminent danger and three others in severe conditions.
Among the 20 injured, 19 were students, who were heading for the Machangying Central Primary School when the accident occurred.

WUHAN, June 6 (Xinhua) -- An official and people's congress deputy in a central China city died Saturday while under investigation over corruption charges, local authorities said Sunday.
Ran Jianxin, 49, died while being interrogated in the People's Procuratorate in Badong County in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, the county government said in a statement.
Ran was a people's congress deputy in the city of Lichuan in Enshi Prefecture and former Party boss and director of Duting Street Office in Lichuan.
He was arrested on May 26 on charges of taking bribes from construction contractors.
Gan Guowei, a cousin of Ran, said he found signs of wounds on Ran's body at the Badong County People's Hospital and believed it was "unnatural death."
The Provincial Procuratorate in Hubei has launched an investigation into Ran's death.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Continuous rainfalls in June will alleviate lingering drought in central and south China, but will also cause flooding in some areas, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has warned.
CMA head Zheng Guoguang said regions along the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River will be "basically relieved from drought this month," as rainy season has begun.
Downpours starting from the beginning of this month have pounded the drought-plagued provinces along the river and have helped ease the drought which started in April and caused shortage of drinking water for millions of people.
"It (the drought) must be over this month, because there will be rainfalls from June 3 to 7 and from June 9 to 11. It will be significantly helpful to alleviate the current drought," Zheng was quoted as saying by the China National Radio on Monday.
However, he said local authorities should not slacken efforts against drought as rainfalls are not enough to alleviate the serious drought because water levels remain low in major lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
Zheng said the regions along the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River should also gear up for possible flooding as the flood season has come.
He called for local authorities in the provinces to make preparatory work against flooding while continuing efforts on drought relief.

GUANGZHOU, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an expressway accident in south China's Guangdong Province rose to eleven after two more bodies were found at the scene on Sunday evening, an official with the provincial government said Monday.
Twenty-one people who were injured, including three seriously injured, were still in hospital, said the official with the emergency management office of Guangdong provincial government.
The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. Saturday when a trailer collided head-on with a coach on an expressway near Huizhou city, instantly killing ten passengers, including two children, on the coach.
Another seriously injured person died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday in hospital after treatment failed.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top meteorological authority said in a Monday forecast that heavy rains will lash parts of eastern and southern China over the next three days.
Parts of western Zhejiang Province and northeastern Jiangxi Province will experience torrential rains from June 6 to 8, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said in a statement on its website.
It also said light to medium rains will fall in China's southwest and northeast, adding that heavy rains will hit southern Guizhou Province and the northern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
CMA head Zheng Guoguang warned that continuous rainfalls may trigger flooding in some areas in central and south China, where a severe drought has dried up several lakes and rivers.
He asked local authorities in regions along the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River to prepare for possible floods while continuing their work to relieve the effects of the drought.
