Merger plan between Cambodia's 2 royalist parties fails: Prince Ranariddh

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 07:55 PM PDT

PHNOM PENH, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The merger plan between Cambodia's two royalist parties--Funcinpec Party and Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP)-- ahead of next year's general election has failed, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the NRP's president, said Tuesday. "The failure is because of Nhiek Bun Chhay, Funcinpec's executive president and his group,"he told a press briefing."Nhiek Bun Chhay does not want to reunite the royalists, the Sihanoukists. "

The rift occurred just three weeks after the two parties signed an agreement on May 24 to merge as the Funcinpec party in order to reunite royalists towards the parliamentary elections in July next year.

Under the agreement, Prince Norodom Ranariddh would be the president of the merged party and Nhik Bun Chhay would be the vice- president. "Now, the NRP cannot merge with the Funcinpec anymore because Nhiek Bun Chhay has already torn up the agreement signed last month,"said the prince.

The prince's reaction was made after Nhiek Bun Chhay said Monday that among the NRP's core activists, there are two groups: one sides with the current government and the other has opposition trend.

He added that Funcinpec would not merge with the NRP if they failed to clarify that they are in line with the incumbent CPP government. "Funcinpec is the alliance party in the current ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), so if the NRP has opposition trend, the CPP- led government will sack us (Funcinpec),"he told Xinhua over telephone on Monday.

Ranariddh said Nhiek Bun Chhay's accusation is groundless and it is his pretext to tear up the agreement.

The prince added that he doesn't has any idea to join forces with the opposition party to oppose the current government led by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The Funcinpec and the NRP won two seats each in the 123-seat parliament in July 2008 elections.
