Cambodia exports garment up 13 pct in first 4 months

PHNOM PENH, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia exported garment and textile products in equivalent to 1.39 billion U.S. dollars in the first four of 2012, up 13 percent from 1.23 billion U.S. dollars at the same period in a year earlier, the reports of the Commerce Ministry showed on Wednesday.

The United States and European countries are the main buyers, and other clients are Canada, Japan, South Korea, China and some other Asian countries.

Garment industry is the country's largest income maker. The sector consists of more than 300 factories, employing some 335,400 workers--91 percent of them are female, according to the Commerce Ministry.

Last year, the sector had exported products in equivalent to 4. 24 billion U.S. dollars, up 25 percent from a year earlier.

Thailand hosts TWG29 meeting to boost tourism in Mekong

BANGKOK, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports will hold the 29th Greater Mekong Sub-region Tourism Working Group Meeting (TWG29) in conjunction with the Mekong Tourism Forum 2012 scheduled for June 13-14 in order to strengthen its tourism industry.

Both events will take place in northern Chiang Mai province of Thailand which was poised to be gateway to the sub-region, local media quoted the ministry's tourism department director general, Supol Sripan, as saying on Tuesday.

During TWG29, six member states of the Greater Mekong Sub- region (GMS), namely Cambodia, China (specifically Yunnan and Guangxi), Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam are set to expand multilateral infrastructure development and socio-economic cooperation in the region under the collaboration and support of the Asian Development Bank, he said.

The group meeting's emphasis, Supol said, will be on tourism- related human resource development, promotion of sustainable tourism as well as sub-regional marketing and product development in the global marketplace.

Cambodia's exports up 17 pct in 1st 4 months

PHNOM PENH, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's exports reached 1.66 billion U.S. dollars in the first four months of 2012, a 17 percent increase from 1.42 billion dollars of the same period last year, according to the statistics of the Commerce Ministry provided to Xinhua on Tuesday.

The surge was the result of marked increases in the exports of garment products, milled rice, and cassava, showed the statistics.

 From January to April this year, the country exported garment and textile products in equivalent to 1.39 billion U.S. dollars, up 13 percent; the exports of milled rice rose by 40 percent to 35 million dollars; the exports of cassava increased by 241 percent to 29 million dollars, it said.

During the period, the value of rubber exports had decreased by 25 percent to 47 million dollars.

In terms of imports, it showed that the country's imports increased by 15 percent to 2.43 billion dollars during the January- April period this year.

Cambodia's main imported products include garment and textile raw materials of 884 million dollars, up 15 percent; petroleum of 619 million dollars, up 37 percent; construction materials of 142 million dollars, down 50 percent; food and soft drinks of 63 million dollars, up 34 percent.

Cambodia's main trading partners include the United States, European countries, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and Canada.

Cambodia rubber exports up 8 pct, revenues down 25 pct in first 4 months

PHNOM PENH, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia saw an 8-percent rise in rubber latex exports in the first four months of this year coupled with a 25-percent decline in the value of export due to the downward rubber price in the international market.

From January to April, the country exported 14,530 tons of rubber latex, up 8 percent from 13,470 tons in the same period last year, the Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.

During the period, the revenues of rubber exports totaled 47 million U.S. dollars, a decline of 25 percent from 63 million U.S. dollars a year earlier.

The price of the best quality rubber sells at 3,408 U.S. dollars a ton in the international market on Wednesday, a sharp drop from 5,220 U.S. dollars at this time last year.

Cambodia's rubber latex has usually been exported to Malaysia, Vietnam and China.

The country now has about 213,100 hectares of rubber plantations, but most of them are too young to be yielded, according to the annual report of the Agriculture Ministry.

In 2011, the country exported 46,730 tons of rubber latex, earning a total revenue of 201 million U.S. dollars, according to a report of the Ministry of Commerce.

China eyes on all-round cooperation with Cambodia, says CPC senior leader

PHNOM PENH, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China treasured its traditional friendship with Cambodia, and would take strategic approaches to step up the bilateral cooperation to a new height, visiting senior leader of the Communist Party of China He Guoqiang said here on Tuesday.

He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and the head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, made the remarks in his respective meetings with Heng Samrin, Honorary President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and president of the Cambodian National Assembly, and Keo Puth Rasmey, chairman of Cambodia's royalist Funcinpec Party.

In his meeting with Heng Samrin, He spoke highly of the development of the China-Cambodia relations since the two nations forged diplomatic relations 54 years ago, expressing his appreciation to Cambodia's firm support on issues to China's key concern.

He said the CPC attaches great importance to the ties with the CPP and would work with the party to promote the all-round cooperative partnership by boosting the inter-party exchanges and cooperation.

Heng Samrin said the Cambodian side felt satisfied with the current growth of the relations with China and would never forget a true friend as China who has offered a large amount of assistance to Cambodia to help the country achieve national development.

The CPP and the Cambodian National Assembly treasures its friendly relations with China and would work actively to promote the friendship between the two nations, two parties and two peoples to a higher level, Heng Samrin said.

While meeting with Keo Puth Rasmey, He said he agreed with Keo Puth Rasmey's views that China-Cambodian relations have thrived like a growing tree, calling on the two sides to contribute efforts to foster the tree for a better growth in a bid to generate fruits for the two peoples.

He also briefed Keo Puth Rasmey with the latest mechanism employed by the CPC for its capacity building, vowing that the CPC would expand its exchange and cooperation with the Funcinpec Party.

Applauding He's visit to Cambodia as very significant one to boost relations between the two nations and two parties, Keo Puth Rasmey said he was confidence in the further development of ties between CPC and the Funcinpec Party which were founded and nurtured by the older generations of Chinese leaders and Cambodian King-Father Norodom Sihanouk.

Funcinpec Party was founded in 1981 by the retired king Norodom Sihanouk. Currently, it is the only one coalition party of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

Visiting as a guest of the CPP and the Funcinpec Party, He arrived in Phnom Penh for a three-day good-will visit on Tuesday. Cambodia is the second leg of his four-nation tour which had already brought him to the Laos and will take him to Malaysia and Russia.

Road accidents kill 911 people in Cambodia in first 5 months, down 3%

PHNOM PENH, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Road accidents had killed at least 911 people in Cambodia in the first five months of this year, a 3 percent decrease from 939 deaths in the same period last year, showed the reports of the Ministry of Public Work and Transport on Tuesday.

The reports recorded that there had been 2,053 road accidents happened from January to May this year, a 16 percent decrease from 2,451 cases in the same period last year.

Besides the deaths, the accidents had injured other 3,540 people, down 17 percent from 4,293 people, it said.

Preap Chan Vibol, director of the Ministry's Transport Department, said that the accidents had been mainly caused by over- speed driving, alcohol driving, and neglect driving.

Traffic accidents had killed had claimed 1,890 human lives in the country last year.
