Sudan to get Chinese medical volunteers Posted: 29 Jun 2012 09:21 PM PDT BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese charity organization held a ceremony on Friday to wave off its first group of medical volunteers to assist Sudan's maternity and family health care work. Volunteers from the the China Foundation of Poverty Alleviation (CFPA)will bring medical equipment worth 200,000 yuan (31,746 U.S. dollars) to the Sudanese and help them set up a maternal and child healthcare system. The mission is part of a five-year program that will see the foundation donate 60 million yuan (9.3 million U.S. dollars) to equip Sudan with more advanced medical facilities and technology. War-ravaged Sudan suffers the world's highest maternal mortality rate. In July 2011, the CFPA, sponsored by PetroChina, the nation's largest oil producer, inaugurated the new China-Sudan Abu Ushar Friendship Hospital, 140 km south of Sudan's capital city of Khartoum. The hospital was first built upon a barn left by British colonists with simple medical facilities. The number of local patients visiting the facility in the first six months after its renovation was 25 percent higher than in the six months before. Since 2005, the CFPA has donated 63 million yuan to assist international charity missions in Indonesia, Cambodia, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. |
