Myanmar celebrities to take part in ASEAN-India car rally

YANGON, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- A total of five celebrities will take part in the second Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Car Rally 2012 in November this year, according to the Myanmar Motion Picture Organization (MMPO) Tuesday.

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of ASEAN-India Friendship, the ASEAN-India car rally is scheduled to take place from Nov.25 to Dec.20.

The rally format will allow a maximum of two official teams from each ASEAN country and India. Each team will be composed of four persons, a statement from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) was quoted as saying.

The rally will begin in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, on Nov. 25.

The drivers will go through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The last leg, which will be in New Delhi of India, is expected to be completed on Dec. 20.

On Dec.12, the racers will pass through Myawady, Hpa-an, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay region, Kalay and Tamu in Myanmar and leave for Imphal of India on Dec.15.

The first Asean-India Car Rally was held in 2004, attracting 240 participants and including 60 vehicles.

Sri Lankan speaker, Malaysian minister to pay homage to late King Sihanouk

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka Chamal Rajapaksa and Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon will visit Cambodia to pay their last respects to late former King Norodom Sihanouk, according to media statements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

One statement said that Chamal Rajapaksa will lead a delegation to pay tribute to the late King at the Royal Palace on Wednesday, and the other said Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon will pay his homage to the late King on Tuesday.

Sihanouk died of illness at the age of 90 in Beijing on Oct. 15 and his body was returned to Phnom Penh by Air China jumbo jet on Oct. 17.

The country announced a week of mourning on Oct. 17-23, and the body of the King-Father will be lying in state at least three months at the Royal Palace before it is cremated.
