Cambodian state-owned telecom firm sees 5% revenue drop in H1

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned Telecom Cambodia reported a 5 percent decline in revenues in the first half of this year due to tough competition in the country's telecommunication industry, company director general Lao Saroeun said Friday.

During the January-June period this year, the firm earned a gross revenue of 14.2 million U.S. dollars, a 5 percent drop from 15 million U.S. dollars a year earlier, he told Xinhua over telephone, attributing the decline to tough competition in the telecom market.

The Southeast Asian nation has the population of about 14.5 million. Currently, the country has two fixed phone operators eight mobile phone operators.

In addition, there are about 30 internet service providers.

"We are strengthening our service quality and offering competitive prices to customers in order to re-grow our revenues in the second half of this year," Lao Saroeun said.

He said the company has about 35,000 subscribers, and the revenues come from local and international phone calls, internet service providers, Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line services ( ADSL), phone connection, fiber optic cable, interconnection fees and transit fees.

The firm is one of the three stated-owned enterprises that have been ordered by the government to prepare IPO (Initial Public Offering) in order to list in the Cambodian Security Exchange (CSX) .

Lao Saroeun said the decrease in revenues was slight, and it would not affect the firm's plan to list in the CSX early next year.

Cambodian PM meets Chinese provincial official to boost ties

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday met Sun Jinlong, the deputy secretary of Anhui's provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, expressing Cambodia's willingness to work with the central China' province in promoting trade and investment.

 

During their meet, Sun spoke highly of Cambodia's fast economic development under the 27-year leadership of Hun Sen.

 

Also, he dedicated his maiden visit to this kingdom to the strengthening and expansion of friendship and cooperation between China's Anhui province and Cambodia.Moreover, he hopes to seek potential possibilities for his province to invest in Cambodia in all domains.

 

Introducing his province, Sun said Anhui is both an agricultural and industrial province with over 100 universities located in, guaranteeing intellectual support in all dimensions.

 

Meanwhile, he also invited the premier to visit Anhui province at his convenience.

 

Hun Sen said that Cambodia would be pleased to see more Chinese investors from Anhui doing business in Cambodia in order to boost the bilateral trade volume to 5 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.

 

He said that the Government of China has provided tax exemption for 418 items of Cambodia's products to its market, so this could be a good opportunity for Chinese investors to put their ventures here and produce any types of duty-free products to export to China.

 

The premier also accepted the invitation to visit Anhui and asked Chinese ambassador to Cambodia to arrange his visit to Anhui province when he visits China.

Chinese Ambassador hails volunteers' contribution in cultural promotion

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue on Friday spoke highly on Chinese language volunteers ' contribution in Cambodia, hailing them as ambassadors of Chinese culture and language in Cambodia.

Speaking to the third tranche of Chinese volunteers in China's embassy, Pan said he appreciates the volunteers' contribution in spreading Chinese culture and teaching Chinese language, which enhances the people-to-people exchanges between the two peoples.

Also, Pan briefly introduced Cambodia's culture and society to the new comers, as well as the bilateral ties between the China and Cambodia in the fields of diplomacy, economy and cultural exchanges.

Pan said 2012 functions as a milestone year in the history of China-Cambodia friendship as many Chinese high-ranking officials had paid successful visits in the past months, including Chinese president Hu Jintao, senior party leader He Guoqiang, as well as other ministerial leaders.

Pan encourages the newly arrived volunteers to further promote Chinese language and culture to the Cambodian natives during their one-year service and elevate the Chinese exposure to the local people.

The new tranche of 73 Chinese had arrived at the capital of Phnom Penh on Friday's early morning with the age range from 22 to 33.

Most of them are graduates from Chinese leading universities. They will be working in Chinese schools in different Cambodian provinces for at least one year.

Int'l machinery expo starts in Cambodia to boost industries

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The second Cambodia- International Machinery Industrial Fair kicked off here on Friday, aiming at promoting the development of industries, officials said.

More than 200 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions have been displaying the international leading brands of industrial equipment in textile and garment, footwear and leather, fabrics and garment accessories, plastics and rubber, printing and packaging, food processing, medical and pharmaceutical equipment, and agriculture-related machinery, said Judy Wang, president of Yorkers Trade and Marketing Service of Hong Kong, which organized the event.

The exhibitors are from Cambodia, China, Czech, Germany, China' s Hong Kong, China's Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam, she said.

The 4-day event, held at the capital's Diamond Island Exhibition Center, would be a platform for manufacturers, buyers, traders, distributors, and government officials to meet in order to exchange ideas on the development of industrial sector.

"It is also a chance for manufacturers to modernize their machinery to increase production capacity," she said, adding that this year's event was 35 percent bigger in scale than that of last year.

Mao Thora, secretary of state at the Ministry of Commerce, said at the inaugural ceremony that Cambodian industrial base mainly relied on garment, accounted for about 75 percent of the country's industrial sector.

"The event paves the way for Cambodia to develop its current and future machinery industries with up-to-date modern technologies," he said.

He added that industries are deemed to be main pillars of the Cambodian economic development and they have been starting to gain steady progress in recent years.
