Cambodian PM meets senior Chinese political adviser to boost economy, tourism

PHNOM PENH, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday met with Edmund Ho, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and discussed the further expansion of bilateral ties in economic,trade and tourism.

 Speaking at the meeting at the Peace Palace, Edmund Ho, who is also chairman of the Global Tourism Economy Forum, said his visit to Cambodia was to further promote China-Cambodia relations and cooperation, particularly between Cambodia and China's Macao.

 Meanwhile, he invited Hun Sen to deliver a speech at the Second Global Tourism Economy Forum to be held in September in Macao.

 Hun Sen accepted the invitation and promised to arrange his schedule to join the forum.

 The premier said Cambodia and China's Macao have much room to broaden cooperation in economy, trade and tourism and asked Edmund Ho to encourage more Chinese to come and invest in Cambodia, especially in tourism.

 He said the country wanted to see a direct flight between Cambodia and China's Macao to promote all-round cooperation.

 Edmund Ho arrived in Cambodia on Saturday for a four-day visit. During his stay, he had visited Angkor Wat temples, a World Heritage Site in northwestern Siem Reap province.

PHNOM PENH, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday lauded outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue for his strong commitment to further enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between Cambodia and China.

"Ambassador Pan has played a very important role to further promote Cambodia-China relations and cooperation," the premier said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a China-funded road in western Kampong Speu province, which was attended by about 10,000 Cambodian people.

"In more than three years of your diplomatic term in Cambodia, the relationship between Cambodia and China have moved from the relationship of good neighbors, good friends and good partners to the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation," Hun Sen said. "This is the highest level of relationship between two countries."

He added that during the term of Ambassador Pan in Cambodia, about 16 roads and bridges under Chinese concessional loans had been either started to construct or inaugurated.

Meanwhile, the premier pinned the government's honorable medal decoration to Pan to express Cambodia's gratitude to him for his strong efforts in developing closer ties between Cambodia and China and in supporting Cambodia in development and poverty reduction.

ASEAN defense ministers meet in Brunei to chart future cooperation

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 7 (Xinhua)-- The defense ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered here on Tuesday to discuss measures and actions to further cement defense and security cooperation in the 10-nation bloc.

Under the theme "Securing Our People, Our Future Together," the seventh ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting (ADMM) aims to boost mutual trust and confidence through increased understanding of defense and security challenges as well as enhancement of transparency and openness.

The three-day meeting emphasized ASEAN members' role in its community building process and highlighted the importance of people-centered ASEAN as its looks forward to the future.

In his opening address, Brunei's Energy Minister Haji Mohammad Yasmin, who is also the chairman of the ADMM, called for closer collaboration to develop joint efforts at bilateral and multilateral level to confront challenges and to maintain a stable environment for continued progress and prosperity in the region.

Yasmin also commended the establishment of an open dialogue platform with ASEAN partners especially within the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting-Plus.

The seventh ADMM meeting came on the heel of the 22nd ASEAN Summit in April which underlined the target to realize the ASEAN Community by 2015.

The ADMM, since it inception in Kula Lumpur, Malaysia in 2006, is the highest defense mechanism within ASEAN.

ASEAN groups Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Chang Wanquan has arrived for ASEAN-China Defense Ministers' Consultative Meeting on Tuesday afternoon and a series of bilateral meetings.

Myanmar hosts drug control meeting

YANGON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar started to host a senior officials meeting on drug control at Chatrium hotel in Yangon Monday through to Tuesday and a ministerial meeting will be followed at Thingaha hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, local media reported Monday.

Representatives are those from China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), said the Popular News.

At the meeting, Myanmar Deputy Police Chief Zaw Win was elected as Chairman of Mekong Regions Transborder Drug Elimination Team.

In 1993, Mekong Region Drug Eliminating Team was formed with Myanmar, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as well as UNODC as partner organization.

From 1990 to 2011, Myanmar authorities burned seized narcotic drugs worth of a total of 2.433 billion U.S. dollars.

In 2012, Myanmar authorities exposed 4,006 drug-related cases, punishing 5,740 culprits including 901 women.

Annually, Myanmar held drug destruction ceremonies in June on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Myanmar is also cooperating with Thailand in implementing alternative development and socio-economic development tasks in Shan state's Tachileik and Monghsat under a memorandum of understanding reached between the two sides.

Myanmar continued to fight drug in 2013 under a revised 15-year drug eradication plan (1999-2014) which has been extended for another five year until 2019 to maintain the momentum of war against drug.

Myanmar has been implementing the 15-year plan since 1999 in three five-year phases to fight against drug.

The original plan has now reached the fourth year of the final five-year phase before it was extended.

Meanwhile, Myanmar and the U.S. will resume carrying out a joint opium yield survey early this year and reestablish channels of cooperation on counter-narcotics issues as a means of assisting law enforcement entitles of Myanmar in addressing the production and trafficking of opium and combat transnational crimes.

Myanmar and the U.S. had already conducted joint opium yield survey 10 times before 2004.

In December last year, Myanmar and the UNODC vowed to boost cooperation in drug eradication, especially that with regional and neighboring countries.
