YANGON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Ministry of Health and the Myanmar Medical Association (MMA) in collaboration with a South Korean orthopaedics foundation will provide orthopaedic care to local and foreign athletes who sustain bone and muscle injuries during the 27th SEA Games, local media reported Thursday.

Members of the Orthopaedics Society, which is under the MMA, and specialists from South Korean Good Shepherds hospital foundation will be on standby at venues in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Ngwe Saung Beach during the games to provide care.

"We will allocate mobile teams to different venues at the competitions," the report quoted Myanmar Orthopaedics Society president Dr Myint Thaung as saying.

"We are not only focusing on the SEA Games. We are aiming to improve sports medicine and sports surgery in Myanmar, using the games as a starting point," he added.

Seoul-based Good Shepherd will provide equipment to the hospitals for the orthopaedic operations.

Myanmar specialists will be trained monthly by Good Shepherd before the games begin.

Myanmar has about 280 orthopaedic specialists but more modern equipment and training is needed to develop orthopaedic care, the society said.

A total of 32 sports events for the SEA Games includes track and field, football, gymnastic, sepak takraw, wushu, Karatedo, taekwondo, boxing, cycling, archery, horse riding, swimming, volleyball, basketball, Judo, Pencak Silat, shuttle cock, shooting, tennis, cane ball, wrestling, bodybuilding, table tennis, chess, billiards and snooker, weighlifting, golf, canoe and kayak and rowing.

In 2011, Myanmar grabbed three gold, one silver and three bronze medals in 26th SEA Games in Indonesia.

The 27th SEA Games will be hosted by Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Ngwesaung Beach for 12 days starting from Dec. 8 to 21 and the event will be competed by 5,000 athletes from 11 countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam and host Myanmar.

Myanmar hosted the Games in 1961 and 1969, winning 104 medals in the 1961 SEA Games and 149 medals in 1969.

The SEA Games, held every two years since 1959, is the largest sports event in Southeast Asia.
