Cambodia reaffirmed to fully support Timor Leste for ASEAN membership

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA, MARCH 29, 2011-Cambodian government on Monday reaffirmed to fully support Timor Leste to become the 11th member of ASEAN.

Cambodia has fully supported Timor Leste to ASEAN membership," Koy Khuong, spokesman for foreign ministry told reporter after the meeting here between Samdech PM Hun Sen and visiting Jose Ramos-Horta, president of Timore Leste.

Timor Leste expected to become 11th member of ASEAN in 2011 and it will have enough capacity to join the group.

"Timore Leste has not had debt for foreign countries and it created difficulties for other members of block," Romos- Horta told Samdech Hun Sen.

"In 2012, Cambodia will become rotating Chairman for ASEAN and this building (Peace Building in Phnom Penh) was built for hosting international summit like ASEAN summit. And Cambodia hope to welcome Timor Leste at that time here," Khuong stresses.

The East Asia summit and ASEAN summit plus dialogue partners like Russia and US will play important role for cooperation.

"The two countries can work together through Timor Leste's resident in Bangkok and Cambodian embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia," spokesman said, adding that Timor Leste has had surplus amount and has not owed debt for any countries.  Cambodia will dispatch the officials to seek gas and oil fields in Timor Leste soon.

According to media release from Cambodian foreign ministry, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta, pays a state visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia on Mar. 29-31 at the invitation of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

During his visit, the president of Timor Leste will be received in royal audience by His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia at the Royal Palace, said it.

H.E. Dr. José Ramos-Horta will also respectively pay courtesy calls on Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal Chea Sim, National Assembly Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, and hold official talks with Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, it noted.
